What you need to know

NCBTMB offers two exams – the National Examination for Therapeutic Massage (NCETM) and the National Examination for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCETMB). Both lead to national certification and share the same eligibility criteria, but there are slight differences in exam content.

Click here for information about eligibility criteria and exam content.

In order for students to be eligible for national certification, they must have graduated from a school that meets NCBTMB’s curriculum and operational requirements. Click here for information about Assigned School codes.

For individuals who do not meet eligibility requirements, there is an alternative known as Portfolio Review. This process allows applicants the opportunity to demonstrate an equivalent education as it relates to the standard eligibility requirements. See the Portfolio Review Handbook for the National Certification Examinations for details.

For individuals who wish to take the National Exam for State Licensure only (“NESL” option), they must complete the application and submit a valid current ID. The NESL was adopted for states that use NCBTMB exams, but do not require applicants for licensure to become certified by NCBTMB. The cost is $175 and applicants take the same exams, but are not required to become certified.

The NESL can be taken at any time during a student’s training. Students who pass have the opportunity to become immediately eligible for state licensure upon completion of their massage therapy program and state’s requirements. If they wish, students can later apply for full national certification by completing the NESL conversion form and meeting our current eligibility requirements.
