Board of Directors

The NCBTMB Board of Directors manages and directs the affairs of the National Certification Board, Board Certification, volunteer committees, publications and examinations. These members also govern NCBTMB's policies and procedures with a mission of defining and advancing the highest standards in the massage therapy and bodywork profession.


Leena Guptha, D.O., BCTMB, MBA (Hons)
Lehigh Valley, PA (term ends December 31, 2016)

Meet Dr. Leena

To the role of Chair, Dr. Leena S. Guptha brings a breadth of experience from working in three education corporations, serving as a Director of Education, Dean of Academic Affairs and campus President, nearly 25 years of practice in Musculoskeletal rebalancing, and various volunteer roles. Dr. Leena is a transformational leader with a strategic business vision to further lead NCBTMB to do the right things for the profession at large. As an ambassador of collaboration, she actively encourages and inspires the highly engaged Board of Directors, Executive Staff, and key stakeholders to take courageous steps forward, such as exiting licensure. Although it may require tough decisions, Dr. Leena, the Board of Directors, and Executive Staff all believe that by streamlining the roles of the professional bodies, NCBTMB will positively recapture its rightful place in the profession through the highest voluntary credential, Board Certification, remain the central administrator for Continuing Education, and continue to serve more than 700 Assigned Schools. Additionally, Dr. Leena is focused on mechanisms to further elevate the standards of education and training through advanced specialty certificates (both domestic and internationally through ITEC) and actively forging career pathways through degree programs in the field of massage therapy.

Educational Background

Dr. Leena studied massage therapy and musculoskeletal rebalancing for two years in the mid 80’s. Later, she went on to receive her degree in Osteopathic and Naturopathic Medicine from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine in London (formerly British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy), a Masters in Complementary Therapy from the University of Westminster, graduated from the British College of Acupuncture with a Licentiate in Acupuncture, is a Board Certified Hypnotherapist, is the Valedictorian of her Masters’ in Business Administration class, is certified in Non-Profit Revenue Generation and Program Evaluation for Non-Profits, and a graduate of Integrative Health Coaching from Duke University.

Dr. Leena’s Diverse Practice

Dr. Leena’s professional career spans over two decades and has encompassed primary care, academic appointments, and administrative roles. She was formerly the Dean of Massage Therapy at Lehigh Valley College in Pennsylvania, and taught at the National University for Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois, for eight years. Additionally, she has been on faculty at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine, as well as The International College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Leena currently maintains her holistic Therapies 2B Well mind-body practice at Greater Lehigh Family Medicine in Bethlehem, PA, and teaches at Desales University, Moravian College, Northampton Community College, and Bucks County Community College. As an NCBTMB Approved Provider, Dr. Leena dedicates her time to promoting and teaching ethics, research, musculoskeletal alignment, myofascial, cranio-sacral, and business practices.

Our Envisioned Future

As a driving force in the massage industry, Dr. Leena’s personal mission since childhood has been to facilitate the integration of complementary alternative therapies into primary healthcare settings. As Chair of NCBTMB, and with the support of Board of Directors, dedicated volunteers, and Executive Staff, she continues to carry the torch for the profession by advancing educational standards, promoting the value of Board Certification, and securing quality continued education providers and classes to universally support education, training, and the practice of massage therapy and bodywork.

Dr. Leena believes that it takes the recognition and acceptance of all the industry stakeholders within and around the massage therapy profession to come together to collaborate and create an envisioned future where each organization supports and promotes the vision and mission of each other; a time where resources are pooled not to simply serve individual groups, but to serve the collective advancement for every massage therapist, every teacher, every school, and every industry partner—empowering massage therapy with the rightful recognition and respect it truly deserves as an everyday part of health and wellness. “It is only through these collaborations that we can truly serve society to our highest power.”


Bruce Baltz, LMT, BCTMB
Loxahatchee, FL (term ends December 31, 2018)

Bruce Baltz is Board Certified and a licensed massage therapist in New York and Florida. Bruce received his massage diploma from the Swedish Institute in New York City in 1993. He is an internationally-recognized educator with over 30 years of experience in the fitness and bodywork industry. An NCBTMB volunteer since 2007, Bruce served on the Approved Provider Committee. He has also held volunteer positions with the Florida State Massage Therapy Association and American Massage Therapy Association. 

In 1999, Bruce developed and started teaching Deep Tissue Stone Massage workshops with LaStone Therapy and founded SpiriPhysical in 2004, focusing on continuing education in massage therapy. In 2007, Bruce added Active Isolated Stretching (IAS) to his teaching repertoire. From 2011 to 2013, Bruce was Vice President of Education and Business Development for Bon Vital Inc. He received his certification in AIS and has developed an AIS program for the Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach, Florida in 2015. Bruce is also a founding member of Deep Freeze Team LLC, offering an advanced new generation of cool therapy pain relief products.


​Jill Berkana, LMT, BCTMB
Denver, CO (term ends December 31, 2019)

With over 25 years of experience as a massage therapy practitioner, Jill joins the Board of Directors as a current NCBTMB Assigned School Owner, Approved Provider for Continuing Education, and Board Certified Massage Therapist. She founded The Costa Rica School of Massage Therapy in 2005, which she sold in 2011. Jill discovered her next mission and founded the Berkana Institute of Massage Therapy in Denver, Colorado. Today, she remains the School Director, the Academic Dean, and provides strategic leadership for the Berkana Institute’s Academic Department. Jill is also a Chief Advisor for all Berkana Institute’s operational, student, and faculty affairs.

Jill is a graduate of the Boulder College of Massage Therapy.

Veronica Stern, BS, MS, CSCS, BCTMB
Minneapolis, MN (term ends December 31, 2018)

A Board Certified massage therapist, personal trainer, and strength and conditioning specialist for nearly ten years, Veronica brings various vital perspectives as a professional, educator, and researcher. She is deeply passionate about health promotion, science of the human body, and growing as an educator. To that end, Veronica is currently teaching undergraduate level courses in Anatomy & Physiology, Nutrition, Kinesiology, and Biomechanics.

Additionally, Veronica is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Health Education and received her Master of Science degree in Biokinesiology from the University of Southern California in 2012. She envisions an academic landscape in which massage therapists have access to higher education with opportunities to specialize in modalities such as medical massage, neuromuscular therapy, and more.

Brenda Jeanne Baker, BA, MA, LMT, BCTMB
Cape Coral, FL (term ends December 31, 2018)

Brenda is a Board Certified Massage Therapist, as well as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Combining mind and body therapies, Brenda advocates healing and growth through nurturing bodywork and behavior change. A counseling psychologist, Brenda works primarily with individuals with developmental and other disabilities to identify socially significant outcomes, and using scientific behavioral principles, teaches replacement behaviors to help individuals achieve their personal goals and self-regulate their lives. This journey led to a sharing by many of the pain and other body issues interconnected with their diagnoses. Ultimately, this is what inspired Brenda to study in bodywork, obtain her massage therapy license, and, furthermore, her Board Certification in Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork. Since, Brenda believed teaching was a natural evolution. She taught psychology to massage therapists and other health professionals, and is currently a certified teacher and NCBTMB Approved Provider of Continuing Education.

Brenda owns Alembia, Inc., providing behavioral therapy and consultation, and Mandy’s – the Place for Kids, providing respite care for children with autism. As co-owner of a day spa, she seeks to share therapeutic interventions for health and a world where the gifts and talents of all people are celebrated. Pursuits of playing flute, mask making, and spending time with family and friends bring joy to any day. 

Teresa M. Matthews, LMT, CPT, BCTMB
Jacksonville, FL (term ends December 31, 2017)

Teresa is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, National CE provider and World Champion Athlete. For the past 18 years, she has owned and operated a successful Massage School in Jacksonville, Florida. Today, she continues to teach advanced massage training and her Personal Training Certification Program.

Teresa graduated from the Arlington School of Massage in Jacksonville in 1996. With over 30 years of experience in the fitness industry, Teresa has taken healthcare to a new level by organizing Health, Wellness & Fitness Professionals, Inc. Her practice brings optimal therapy to her clients by combining massage and personal training bodywork. She specializes in Kinesiology, Deep Tissue/Sports Massage, Strength Training and Stretching.

Michael McGillicuddy LMT, BCTMB, CKTP
Winter Park, FL (term ends December 31, 2016)

Michael McGillicuddy is Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and is the President of USA Pro-Sports, a continuing education company, which conducts workshops throughout the world. Michael is also an internationally-recognized speaker and has spoken in the USA, Europe and Australia. Michael graduated from the Florida School of Massage Therapy in Gainesville, Florida in 1984 and is the owner and administrator of the Central Florida School of Massage Therapy in Winter Park, Florida, where he teaches and practices massage therapy. Additionally, Michael designed and conducts a sports internship program at the University of Central Florida for graduate students of massage therapy. 

In 1996, Michael was selected as an Athlete’s Medical Service Volunteer working in the Atlanta Olympic Village Athletic Training Room. He is a past State President of the Florida State Massage Association, and an international educator. Michael has conducted Sports Massage and pain management massage trainings throughout the United States.

Public Member

Dr. Stuart Watts, D.O.M.
Albuquerque, NM (term ends December 31, 2017)

Dr. Watts is currently licensed as a Doctor of Oriental Medicine in New Mexico and Hawaii. He began studying Chinese medicine in San Francisco in the 1960’s, with further studies in Texas, Boston and England. Dr. Watts is the founder of 5 institutes of Asian medicine: Academy of Oriental Medicine – Austin (AOMA), Southwest Acupuncture College (SWAC), Institute of Traditional Medicine (ITM) (later the International Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (IICM), Santa Fe College of Natural Medicine (acupuncture program) and North American Academy of Asian Medicine (NAAAM).

Dr. Watts obtained his Doctorate degree in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College. A practitioner for over 40 years, he has also been a teacher in various forms of alternative medicine for over 35 years. Dr. Watts is a concerned practitioner of the healing arts and has worked for both practitioner rights and the rights of the public.
