Moving Forward with the Value of Certification

by Sue Toscano

I’m thrilled to get started as the new Chair of NCBTMB!  We’ve done so much already in these past 18 months, and I can’t wait to continue over the next two years!

First, a brief introduction. I’m from Groton, Connecticut, and I’ve been a licensed massage therapist for more than 21 years. I am also Nationally Certified with my NCTMB credential (transitioning soon to Board Certified).  My bachelor’s degree is in Holistic Studies from Norwich University, where I attended after earning a diploma from the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy. I currently work with The Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy/Steiner Education Group, managing the enrollment team for our schools.  I have a heartfelt connection to developing successful relationships between massage therapy schools and the National Certification Board’s current and future programs. I enjoy my job, and I particularly love and find value in the work we (massage therapists) do as a healing profession.

In fact, as a profession, massage therapy overall has made great strides forward—from the landmark National Certification developed 20 years ago—to the more recent NCB elevations of these past few years.

And we know there’s more to do. One area, in particular, that we’ve heard repeated over and over from the profession (and I just happen to be passionate about it as well!) is this:  create awareness of  the value of certification for massage therapists.

This is one of my key goals, shared along with Mike Williams, our CEO, and it will be among my top priorities as Chair.  That is, define, develop, and promote the value of certification for massage therapists.  That’s our job.  My job; the Board’s job; and your job too!  The profession is ripe for a publicly understood career path for massage therapists, and we deserve it!  I challenge everyone to do more than they “have to,” to excel in their practice, and to steward new therapists to strive for the highest credential available in our profession.

I invite you to stay in touch, as always, as we embark together on this next leg of our journey.
