What is the value of recertification?

Recertifying your credential as a nationally certified massage therapist or bodyworker is a personal choice. Some individuals recertify without question while others struggle with why they need to do this. What do you feel is the value of recertification and what can NCBTMB do to increase the value of recertification for you?

I was under the understanding that recertification was required to maintain a valid Therapeutic massage liscense. That so many hours were mandatory per year or every two years to maintain a valid liscense.

Being a practicing therapist with over 15 years of professional experience I have enjoyed the “mostly” seemless transfer of my national certification across 4 state lines throughout my career. Admittedly it took me over 8 years of professional practice and moving to Chicago, which required the certification for licensure, to finally obtain the NCBTMB credential. Now that I have it I intend to maintain it as long as I am practicing and teaching in the massage and bodywork industry. My next step in this process is obtaining the NCBTMB CE provider credential.

Thanks for making the recertificaiton process more flexible in the past four years by accepting academic courses, college degrees and honoring the work of those of us who are making contributions to the industry through educating, curriculum development, research, community activism and authoring books and articles.
