The certification process
So that you know what to expect – and what to prepare for – the NCBTMB application process is outlined below, step by step.
If you are submitting a printed application, complete the application form and sign the Background Check, Statement of Understanding, Candidate Compliance and, if applicable, the Applicant Authorization sections. Include a photocopy of a current U.S. government issued photo ID and enclose your $225* payment – in the form of a check, casher’s check, money order, voucher or credit card – to Wachovia Bank (see back of Candidate Handbook for complete address). Make a copy of your application packet for your records before mailing.
If you are submitting an online application, send signed Background Check, Statement of Understanding, Candidate Compliance and, if applicable, Applicant Authorization forms to NCBTMB (see back of Candidate Handbook for complete address). Include a photocopy of a current U.S. government issued photo ID. Make a copy of your application packet for your records before mailing.
Submit a request to your school to have a sealed copy of your official transcript sent to NCBTMB.
Complete applications are processed in three to four weeks. You will receive either an Authorization to Test (ATT), a Letter of Incomplete Application or a Denial Letter.
If you receive an ATT Letter, you will be provided with information on how to make your exam reservation.
If you receive a letter saying your application is incomplete, you will receive instructions on how to proceed.
If you receive a Denial Letter, the reason(s) will be provided.
On the day of your exam, you will need to bring one of the following: current driver’s license, current passport, current military ID card, current state ID card or a Canadian Provincial Citizenship card. A biometric sample (such as a fingerprint or palm scan) will be taken.
You will receive an unofficial score report on the day you complete the exam. Your performance will be rated Pass or Fail. Official score reports will be mailed approximately two business days after you take the exam. NOTE: You must indicate on your application if you want a score report sent to your state regulatory agency.
For complete instructions, eligibility requirements, fees, sample questions, forms and more, consult the National Certification Examination Candidate Handbook. You can download a copy – or order one online. NCBTMB's exams have been translated into Spanish, but Spanish-speaking applicants should contact their state board to determine if the exams are approved for use in their state. A Spanish language Candidate Handbook is also available. You can download a copy, order one online or call 1-888-802-6600 and ask that Publication #694 be sent to you.
