Scam Alert!
NCBTMB has received several reports from Nationally Certified Massage Therapists about e-mail solicitations from fraudulent sources. In the e-mail, the supposed client asks to schedule massage sessions for a future date. They also ask for personal information in order to send a check or money order to the therapist. The client then sends a check for more than the amount of the services, and asks therapists to return the balance. Most banks will recognize the fake check right away, but to the untrained eye, it appears to be legitimate. Don’t fall victim to this scam. Contact the Federal Trade Commission’s website at www.ftc.gov/ftc/consumer.htm to file a complaint.
Avoid internet scams by following these simple guidelines:
- Use common sense. If you have a feeling that something isn't legitimate, you are probably right.
- Do not provide personal or financial information to unknown sources.
- Make sure the individual or company has a phone number and physical address.
- Be skeptical of e-mails with poor grammar and misspelled words.
- Check with the National Fraud Information Center (NFIC) at www.fraud.org. NFIC provides lots of valuable resources about telephone, mail and online scams.
